sun[set] provisioning

Data handling and Unity scripting for a CGI artwork

Digital fabrication for artist Yuri Pattison, in collaboration with designer Tom Merrell - The endlessly morphing sunset/sunrise/moonrise of sun[set] provisioning alludes to the phenomenon of spectacular sunsets that occur only because of high amounts of pollution in the atmosphere.

Technologies:

  • 🞅 Unity game engine
  • 🞅 Unity scripting (C#)
  • 🞅 API integration
  • 🞅 Local networking
  • 🞅 PHP
  • 🞅 mySQL database
  • 🞅 Apache web server

The work mimics these (un)natural sunsets by measuring the levels of local pollution and, as the level increases, the more spectacular and colourful the computer generated scene is.

Real-time environmental data is pulled from a networked uRad pollution monitor, the data is then translated and used to define variables within the rendered 3D scene built in the Unity game engine. The work has been show in the UK and internationally and was acquired for the Tate’s permanent collection in 2021.

Interloper

Bespoke hardare and software for data-driven, dynamic lighting

Digital Fabrication for artist Anne Hardy in which a low-hanging grids of lights initially appear to be malfunctioning; flickering, waxing and waning. Rather than a glitch however, the lights are programmed to change in reaction to meteorological patterns; bringing the weather into the gallery and giving physical form to the effect that outside forces can have on our experience of the world.

Air is Kin

Design, back-end and front-end devlopment for an interactive research presentation

A collaboration with The Centric Lab and Science Gallery London, an interactive presentation of Air is Kin which centres the voices of clean air advocates demanding the abolition of ‘sacrifice zones’ such as the area around Heathrow Airport, where ‘right to pollute’ legislation prioritises economic interests over community health.

Cosmolical Visionaries

Design, back-end and front-end devlopment for an interactive research presentation

A collaboration with researchers at Kings College London and Science Gallery London to develop an innovative way for users to examine and learn about sacred objects from the Nuosu ethnic group using 3D rendered objects.

The design mimicked the weChat UI and contextual information was delivered on ‘messages’ the user could open and read, echoing the Nuosu shamans’ use of mobile phones in, and to record, their rituals. Users could rotate, zoom and interact with the objects.
